Hidden in the middle of deep forests of Lika region in Croatia, Plitvice lakes are one of the Europe’s top natural attractions. Thousands of tourists vist this National park every year, but did you know that just a few steps off of the main paths there is a real wilderness, an orienteers’ treat at its best?

On Darko Sakar’s (OK Maksimir, Zagreb) initiative in 1988 the first orienteering map of Plitvice was made by Arne Dirdal and Mats Karlsson, however, it was not before 18 years later that the first competition was actually organized there. In the period 2006 – 2007 a part of the map was renewed by Slovenian-Croatian and Czech mappers. This time it was Dario Štambuk, a Zagreb based dentist and a keen orienteer, who decided to revive the Plitvice project. I happened to be one of the lucky guys invited for mapping.

Strong similarity of relief features

Despite some heavy rains and cold hands during my stay in Plitvice, mapping of the area was fun, though I have to admit that running on the unknown part of the map made by Czech mappers was even far better. The main challenge of the area is the lack of paths, occasionally greenish vegetation which hinders visibility and above all a strong similarity of relief features. You lose map contact once, and most likely you will end up with a bad race. The fastest way to navigate through this area is to use the gentle ridges and flat hill tops between depressions as kind of line objects whenever you can. A skilled course planner will try to make this hardly possible, though.

Why should you run on this map before you die?

So why did we choose this map as a candidate for 101 maps you should run on before you die? Mainly because of the quality of terrain, but also because of the beauty of this very special place. Plitvice lakes are UNESCO protected and as corny as it may sound they really are something you should see. Not only because of unique waterscape, but also for the fact that the forests that surround the lakes kept their truly wild spirit – isn’t it exciting to know that the more remote parts of this big National park are still inhabited by the rare specieses like wolf (Canis Lupus), bear (Ursus arctos) and the bobcat (Lynx lynx)?

Si em preguntaren quin es el dia que més m’agrada del any possiblement diria que el dia de les fogueres (22 d’abril), simplement per eixir a tocar en els dolçainers, les fogueres i els cohets borratxos, l’olor a fum i pólvora els amics tapats fins les orelles per evitar cremar-mos, els pantalons i jaquetes plenes de cremats, i els finals de nit en l’ambulatori amb alguna que altra cremada. Sona un poc masoquista, pot ser som….

be, tota aquesta descripció es per que aquest cap de setmana en van convidar a anar a tocar a Biar, en un principi no tenia molt clar el que, però al aplegar allí em van descriure el mateix que ocorre ací el dia de les fogueres: passacarrer amb els dolçainers, fogueres, menjar, beguda i finalment cohets borratxos…PERFECTE!!!!

vam disfrutar com a xiquets, em van regalar 8 dotzenes de cohets i vam menjar tocar i veure fins rebentar, i tot gratis, gracies a la gent de Biar, que ens van donar tot el que vam necessitar, fins i tot ens van vestir per eixir a tirar cohets……

al dia següent Sant Antoni del Porquet en Onil, i en les poquetes hores que vam dormir el dia d’avanç un es pot quedar dormint en qualsevol lloc…

KITE!!!

Fa molt de temps que vaig seguint de prop aquest “esport”, no la modalitat a practicar al mar, sinó la de terra, normalment es practica amb un buggy o patinet especial, finalment he decidit intentar-ho i he comprat una cometa de tracció, o “kite” primer intentaré aprendre a utilitzar-la i qui sap, igual finalment em faig amb un buggy…. combina prou de la técnica del parapent, almenys els principis aerodinàmics pareixen més o menys els mateixos. I és perfecte, ja que quan fa massa vent per volar en parapent és quan s’entra en el marge del kite..

casualitats de la vida, hui en internet he vist un enllaç d’una pàgina web que tenia fa molts anys, i sorprenentment encara funciona, fara uns 4 anys que no entrava a aquesta web i pensava que no existia ja, però els allotjaments web`s pareix que no caduquen mai, pel que he vist en el ftp de lycoos, tinc mes pàgines, que si aconseguisc trobar l’enllaç penjaré a aquest bloc… la direcció de la web ( més que web és una postal)
